Saudi Arabia is considering launching a major military operation against Yemen’s Houthis as tensions rise in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Riyadh could carry out the operation without direct US military support if necessary, according to ABC News.
However, Saudi Arabia has not yet made a final decision. The United States is also not currently planning direct strikes against the Houthis, though Washington could change its position if threats to commercial shipping in the Red Sea intensify.
Citing two US officials, ABC News reported that Saudi Arabia recently informed Washington that it was prepared to launch a major military operation against the Houthis. The US is currently providing Riyadh with intelligence and assistance in identifying targets.
US Central Command chief Admiral Brad Cooper reportedly visited Saudi Arabia on Thursday and held talks with Saudi officials. On the same day, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke twice by phone with US President Donald Trump.
A US official said the Saudi crown prince is seeking direct US military intervention but does not consider it immediately necessary.
The Trump administration considers ensuring freedom and security of navigation in the Red Sea a key US interest. However, Washington wants regional countries, including Saudi Arabia, to take the lead in addressing the security crisis.
Officials said the US could intervene directly if Houthi attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea increase further.
