Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said that discussions are underway regarding the possible extradition of prominent Indian Islamic preacher Zakaria Nayek to India. He made the remarks in an interview with Indian news outlet NDTV after meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (September 12).
Anwar said the issue was discussed during the meeting but was kept confidential in the interest of both countries. He said it has been given priority as part of efforts to strengthen mutual trust and bilateral relations.
The Malaysian prime minister stressed that any decision on extradition must respect the rule of law. He said Malaysia understands India’s demand but must proceed cautiously while considering both legal principles and the importance of bilateral ties.
Nayek, who is accused in India of money laundering and making allegedly inflammatory remarks, currently lives in Malaysia as a permanent resident. India has repeatedly sought his extradition, while Malaysia has said it would cooperate only if specific and credible evidence is provided and due legal procedures are followed.
