The US Embassy in Dhaka has warned people about fake social media accounts using the identities of American diplomats. The embassy said scammers may use such profiles to contact people and attempt to obtain money or personal financial information.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday (September 15), the embassy said its employees would never ask anyone online for money, gift cards or personal financial information. People receiving such requests were advised to treat them as scams.
The embassy urged the public not to respond to messages from fake accounts and never to send money. It also advised people not to share personal financial information online.
