Lasting peace in the Middle East is impossible without a two-state solution, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said. He also called for an end to what he described as Israel’s “gradual expansion of control” in the occupied West Bank.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday (September 16), Guterres called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. He said the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank must not be forgotten.
Guterres also urged the full implementation of the announced Gaza peace plan and called for unhindered access for humanitarian aid.
According to the UN chief, a ceasefire could be the first step toward a just, lasting and comprehensive peace.
