Amid the heated situation between India and Bangladesh over bilateral trade issues, multiple Indian government sources have claimed that India has no intention of engaging in a trade war with Bangladesh.
This information was reported in a report by the Indian English daily Times of India on Thursday (April 17). The report claims that Delhi may not take any countermeasures in response to the trade decision taken by Dhaka. The Times of India claimed that before the Indian government scrapped the transshipment facility, Bangladesh had decided to close three ports and stop importing yarn through land ports in March. However, the interim government only issued instructions regarding yarn imports last week.
The report also claims that Indian authorities believe that the announcement by Bangladesh to increase the alert level at the Benapole Customs House last January was also made to hinder trade between the two countries. Bangladesh has started direct trade with Pakistan to disrupt trade with India. The report said that in February, it imported 50,000 tonnes of rice through Pakistan Trading Corporation.
