Power Tariff Likely to Rise in June

Electricity prices in Bangladesh are likely to increase from June as the country’s energy regulator moves to finalize a new tariff structure this month.

Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission is expected to complete public hearings this week and determine the revised electricity rates by the end of May.

The ongoing tensions involving Iran। Israel and the United States have already pushed up global fuel prices. The impact is being felt across Bangladesh through higher transportation costs and rising prices of daily essentials. The cost of bottled LPG cylinders has also increased sharply in recent weeks.

Consumers fear that a further hike in electricity tariffs could put additional pressure on household expenses and overall living costs.

Sources said Bangladesh Power Development Board along with its transmission and distribution companies have submitted proposals for a new pricing structure. Authorities are expected to finalize the revised rates soon after reviewing opinions gathered during the public hearings.
