Iran Won’t Hesitate to Defend Itself as Nuclear Deal Faces Uncertainty: Baghaei

Iran has warned that it will not hesitate to take defensive measures to protect its sovereignty and national security, as uncertainty grows over its agreement with the United States.

Speaking to Iran's state media on Monday (July 13), Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Iran's recent strikes targeted only those U.S. bases and facilities that had been used to launch attacks against the country.

"We will not hesitate when it comes to self-defense," Baghaei said.

He accused the United States of using the Strait of Hormuz to undermine Iran's sovereignty and security, adding that Tehran could not accept such actions.

According to Baghaei, discussions held on Saturday primarily focused on ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategically important shipping routes. He claimed that progress had been hindered by U.S. pressure on Oman.

Meanwhile, vessel-tracking agencies reported that no ships had transited the Strait of Hormuz since Sunday evening, as renewed military tensions disrupted commercial shipping through the vital waterway.

Baghaei also cast doubt on the future of a 14-point memorandum of understanding reportedly signed between Iran and the United States on June 17 through Pakistani mediation. He said Iran would not remain committed to its obligations if Washington failed to implement the terms of the agreement.

Analysts say the rising tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, coupled with uncertainty over diplomatic efforts, could further destabilize the Middle East and disrupt global energy supplies and international trade.
