Female Inmate Escapes from Kashimpur Prison; Seven Prison Staff Suspended

A female inmate has escaped from Kashimpur Central Women's Prison in Gazipur, prompting prison authorities to temporarily suspend seven officials over allegations of negligence.

The development was confirmed on Saturday (July 18) by Mohammad Jannatul Farhad, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of the Prison Directorate.

According to Jannatul Farhad, an internal investigation found evidence of negligence in the discharge of duty, leading to the temporary suspension of the seven staff members.

Those suspended include three matrons—Laila Anjuman Sumi, Marina, and Rehena—and four female prison guards—Shayla, Sharmin, Jemy, and Asma.

The escape took place on Thursday evening (July 16) while around 40 female inmates were assigned to carry bricks inside the prison. Authorities said a lapse in supervision by the matrons allowed Rimpa (21) to climb onto a ledge beside the prison office building and scale the perimeter wall before fleeing.

Rimpa, daughter of Md. Hasan from Raipur in Gangni Upazila, Meherpur, was serving a three-month sentence at Kashimpur Central Women's Prison in connection with a CR case filed at Dhanmondi Police Station in Dhaka.

Following the incident, prison authorities conducted an extensive search inside the facility but failed to locate her. A review of CCTV footage later confirmed that she had escaped by climbing over the boundary wall.

Police and other law enforcement agencies are continuing operations to locate and arrest the escaped inmate.
