The Election Commission (EC) has announced that teachers of MPO-listed educational institutions, dual citizens, loan defaulters, and guarantors of defaulted loans will not be eligible to contest the upcoming local government elections.

The decision was made on Tuesday (21 July) at a meeting of the Commission chaired by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A.M.M. Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka.

During the meeting, the Commission reviewed various proposals to amend laws governing elections to City Corporations, Municipalities, Upazila Parishads, Zila Parishads, and Union Parishads.

The Election Commission is finalizing the necessary legal framework with the aim of beginning the local government elections in October. According to the plan, the first phase of the polls may include elections for Union Parishads and Municipalities.
