Government Has No Information on President’s Resignation Rumours: Home Adviser

Home Adviser Salahuddin Ahmed has dismissed the ongoing speculation surrounding President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s possible resignation, saying the government has no information regarding the matter. He added that while the Constitution allows the President to resign for health or other personal reasons, the government has neither received any such indication nor taken any action in this regard.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Thursday (July 23), the Home Adviser described the reports as mere speculation.

“Rumours about the President’s resignation are just rumours. If it becomes a reality, then we will deal with the matter,” he said.

Salahuddin Ahmed noted that the President has the constitutional right to step down if he wishes to resign due to health issues or any other reason. However, he stressed that he has no information suggesting the President has made such a decision.

“The government has taken no step on this issue, nor has it made any statement. Whether the President wants to resign due to health reasons is something that should be asked of him,” he said.

Responding to a question about whether the President had spoken with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina while she was abroad for medical treatment, the Home Adviser said he had no information regarding any such conversation.

Explaining the constitutional procedure for a presidential resignation, Salahuddin Ahmed said that if the President decides to step down, he must submit a resignation letter to the Speaker of Parliament. The matter would then proceed in accordance with the constitutional provisions.

“If the President wishes to resign, the Constitution provides that option. The resignation letter must be submitted to the Speaker, after which the constitutional process will determine the next course of action, including the appointment of a new President,” he said.
