At least 18 Rohingyas were rescued alive after a boat carrying Rohingyas capsized off the coast of Shah Porir Dwip West Para in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar. However, 13 others remain missing.

The accident occurred on Friday morning (July 31) as the Rohingyas were fleeing to Bangladesh amid the ongoing conflict in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.

According to local residents, fishermen rescued the survivors and handed them over to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). None of the rescued individuals were women or children. The survivors reportedly said they had gone to Myanmar to take part in the fighting and returned to Bangladesh due to the current situation.

Currently, around 1.25 million registered Rohingya refugees are living in 33 refugee camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf. Of them, nearly 800,000 fled to Bangladesh following the violence that erupted on August 25, 2017.
