The long-running transfer speculation is finally nearing an end, with Arsenal reaching an agreement with Newcastle United to sign Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimarães. According to Reuters, the deal is expected to be completed for around £75 million, which is equivalent to more than Tk 1,150 crore.
If everything goes as planned, Arsenal are expected to officially announce Guimarães as their new signing soon. The Brazilian midfielder is currently in Spain as part of Newcastle’s pre-season preparations and has been given permission to travel to London for his medical.
Although he still had two years remaining on his contract with Newcastle, Guimarães had already expressed his desire to leave the club. After Newcastle failed to qualify for European competitions last season, the club eventually agreed to the player’s decision. Following several rounds of negotiations, the two clubs also reached an agreement over the financial terms.
However, the transfer process was not straightforward. Newcastle initially rejected several offers from Arsenal as they were determined to keep hold of their captain. But the player’s interest in the move and progress in discussions between the two clubs eventually opened the door for an agreement.
Newcastle’s rebuilding plans following the departure of manager Eddie Howe are also believed to have influenced the decision. The club has already brought in alternative options to strengthen its midfield. Meanwhile, Guimarães had reached a personal agreement with Arsenal earlier.
Guimarães joined Newcastle from French club Lyon in 2022 and quickly became one of the team’s most reliable players. He has scored 31 goals in 195 appearances for Newcastle across all competitions.
Last season, he was named Newcastle’s Player of the Year after scoring nine goals and providing seven assists in 41 matches.
Guimarães’ arrival is expected to further strengthen Arsenal’s midfield under manager Mikel Arteta. After securing the Brazilian midfielder, the London club could now turn its attention towards other major targets in the transfer market.
