Thailand has expressed interest in recruiting workers from Bangladesh to address labor shortages in various sectors. Discussions have also taken place on signing a Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries to facilitate the recruitment process.
The issue was discussed during a meeting between Bangladesh’s Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury and a Thai delegation. The meeting emphasized transparent and low-cost recruitment, fair wages, accommodation, medical insurance and protection of workers’ rights.
The Thai delegation said Thailand currently has labor recruitment agreements with four countries. However, due to recent border tensions with Cambodia, recruitment from that country has been suspended in several sectors. As a result, Thailand is interested in making Bangladesh its fifth source country for workers.
The Thai side also raised concerns over visa overstays, using Thailand as a transit point to other countries and human trafficking. Bangladesh assured the delegation that these issues would be addressed.
Both sides expressed hope that a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed soon, opening new employment opportunities for Bangladeshi workers in Thailand.
