A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s Flores region early Saturday, August 15, killing at least 38 people.
Indonesia’s disaster management agency said many people were injured and several buildings were damaged. Multiple aftershocks were also reported, including one measuring 6.1 in magnitude.
Authorities reported deaths in several areas, including Sikka, Manggarai and East Manggarai. Several people were seriously injured while others suffered minor injuries.
At Maumere Port, part of a terminal building collapsed during the earthquake. A walkway used to board a ship also collapsed, causing several people to fall into the sea.
The governor of East Nusa Tenggara said some people died while sleeping after buildings collapsed on them.
Rescue teams are continuing operations in the affected areas as authorities assess the extent of the damage and search for survivors.
