Tensions have once again risen along the border between North and South Korea. South Korean forces fired warning shots after several North Korean soldiers crossed the military demarcation line and entered South Korean territory. The incident is reportedly the first such border violation by North Korean troops this year.

According to local media reports citing the South Korean military, several North Korean soldiers crossed the military demarcation line in the eastern part of the Demilitarized Zone last week. They are believed to have accidentally crossed the boundary while conducting a routine patrol.

After South Korean forces fired warning shots, the North Korean soldiers returned to their side of the border. No further unusual activity was reported in the area.

The incident comes amid growing tensions over an upcoming joint military exercise between the United States and South Korea. North Korea has strongly condemned the drills and warned that it could take stronger countermeasures in response.

The 11-day annual military exercise is scheduled to begin Monday, with thousands of South Korean and US troops expected to participate. The exercise is aimed at strengthening defensive preparedness against potential threats from nuclear-armed North Korea.

The Korean War, which lasted from 1950 to 1953, ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty. As a result, the two Koreas technically remain in a state of war.
