A mild earthquake was felt in Dhaka and surrounding areas early Monday (August 17). According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the earthquake measured 3.0 on the Richter scale and occurred at around 5:32 am.

The Earthquake Observation and Research Centre said the epicentre was in Shibpur of Narsingdi, about 47 kilometres northeast of the Dhaka Earthquake Observation Centre. The earthquake originated at a depth of approximately 10 kilometres beneath the surface.

The low-intensity tremor was felt briefly in several parts of Dhaka and nearby areas. However, no casualties or damage have been reported so far.

Narsingdi has experienced several earthquakes in the past, including tremors that caused casualties. The latest incident has once again highlighted concerns over earthquake preparedness in the region.
