India is interested in advancing constructive and positive relations with Bangladesh, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Tuesday (August 18) during the ministry’s weekly briefing.
Asked about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s possible visit to India, Jaiswal said there was no new information on the matter and that any fresh developments would be shared. He said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had invited Bangladesh’s prime minister for a bilateral visit, as well as to attend the outreach session of the BRICS summit.
Jaiswal also said India was reviewing Bangladesh’s request for the repatriation of Sheikh Hasina. At the same time, India was considering Bangladesh’s request for additional fuel supplies. He added that the existing agreement to supply diesel to Bangladesh remains in place.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh has said that a favourable environment and mutual trust need to be ensured before Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s proposed visit to India. Discussions on the visit are continuing amid tensions between the two countries.
