Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the outgoing secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the party’s presidential candidate, broke down in tears several times during his farewell speech at the BNP parliamentary party meeting on Wednesday (August 19).

Speaking at the meeting held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, Fakhrul asked party leaders and lawmakers to pray for him and urged them to vote for him in the upcoming presidential election.

At the beginning of his speech, Fakhrul became emotional and recalled former BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, expressing his gratitude for her support and guidance throughout his political career.

Reflecting on his long service as BNP’s senior joint secretary general, acting secretary general and secretary general, Fakhrul said he sincerely apologized if he had made any mistakes or unintentionally hurt anyone during his time in office.

He also pledged to uphold the honor and responsibilities entrusted to him by the BNP, saying he would protect the country’s independence and sovereignty without compromise.

At the meeting, BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman urged the party’s lawmakers to vote for Fakhrul in the presidential election scheduled for August 20.
