At least 160 bodies have been recovered following devastating flash floods in Nepal. A state of emergency remains in effect as rescue teams continue operations to find those missing and evacuate people from high-risk areas.
At least 844 people are still missing, including more than 450 foreign nationals. Among them are 133 Indians, as well as citizens from at least 28 countries, including the United States, Australia, the Netherlands and Malaysia.
Meanwhile, the strong tremor felt before the floods was not an earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The agency said the tremor was caused by a glacier collapse and landslide.
The tremor was initially detected as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake near the Nepal-China border north of Kathmandu on Wednesday morning. The USGS later clarified that no earthquake had occurred.
A massive landslide of ice and rocks in the Lhende River, about 20 kilometers northeast of the Rasuwagadhi border checkpoint, sent huge amounts of rocks, mud and water downstream, triggering the devastating flash floods.
