India has signed an agreement with the United States to acquire Javelin anti-tank missile systems, marking another step forward in defence cooperation between the two countries.
The agreement was announced by the U.S. Embassy in India on Friday, August 28. The value and exact quantity of the deal were not initially disclosed.
U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said the acquisition of the battle-tested Javelin system would strengthen defence ties between Washington and New Delhi. He also said the deal could open opportunities for joint production of the missile system in the future.
The Javelin is a man-portable, shoulder-fired anti-tank guided missile developed jointly by Lockheed Martin and RTX. It uses a fire-and-forget system, allowing operators to move away from the firing position after launching the missile.
The system is designed to engage armoured vehicles and is already used by the U.S. military and several allied forces.
India has been expanding its defence cooperation with the United States as part of its broader military modernisation programme.
