The tribunal has ordered the formal framing of charges against former ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and two others in a case related to crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising. This marks the official commencement of the trial against the three accused in the July massacre case.
Rejecting the plea to discharge the accused, the order was issued on Thursday (July 10) by International Crimes Tribunal-1, headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mojumdar. The two other members of the tribunal are Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
In connection with crimes against humanity during the July-August uprising, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun has admitted his guilt.
Standing in the dock of the tribunal, he stated in a written testimony that he wishes to unmask those involved in the crimes. Prosecutors and lawyers confirmed that he has now become a state witness.
Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam represented the prosecution, while Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan, both absconding, were represented by state-appointed lawyer Amir Hossain.
