Wildfires have worsened dramatically across western Canada, with the affected area doubling in size within a single night. Authorities have issued emergency alerts as fires continue to spread rapidly.

On Saturday (August 8), wildfires had burned more than 9,000 hectares, forcing over 20,000 people to evacuate in British Columbia. Several highways in the affected areas have also been closed.

British Columbia Premier David Eby declared a state of emergency in the province. More than 100 wildfires were active across British Columbia, with nearly half considered out of control due to extreme heat, strong winds and prolonged drought.

The entire community of Summerland, home to around 12,000 people, was ordered to evacuate on Friday night. Around 8,000 residents of nearby Peachland and surrounding areas were also told to move to safer locations. Authorities have not yet confirmed how many homes have been destroyed.

Premier Eby said some residents became trapped by the fires and had to be rescued. Search and rescue teams are continuing to check areas behind the fire lines to ensure that no one remains stranded.

“People have lost their homes. Many have been displaced. Others are waiting for news about loved ones,” Eby said.

The Bald Range wildfire was first reported on Friday evening. The fire then spread rapidly, moving from the small community of Foulds toward Summerland after covering about 15 kilometers.

Record heatwaves in Canada and the United States in recent months have further worsened the wildfire situation. Extreme heat has dried vegetation, creating conditions that allow fires to spread quickly.

Meanwhile, the U.S. state of Washington, south of British Columbia, has also experienced major wildfires this month. Smoke from the fires has caused air quality to deteriorate across the region.
