Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has stripped his daughter-in-law, Pengiran Rabiatul Adawiyah, of all her royal titles, citing what he described as inappropriate conduct as a member of the royal family.
The decision was announced earlier this month by the Office of the Grand Chamberlain of Brunei Darussalam. The order took immediate effect. Officials said Rabiatul’s titles were withdrawn over alleged disrespect toward the Sultan and conduct considered inappropriate for the wife of a member of the royal family.
However, authorities have not disclosed details about what Rabiatul allegedly did. State broadcaster Radio Television Brunei reported that her actions were viewed as damaging to the reputation of the monarchy.
Rabiatul, 33, is the wife of Prince Abdul Malik, 43, who is fourth in line to the Brunei throne. The couple married in 2015 in a lavish ceremony held at the royal palace in Bandar Seri Begawan. Their wedding celebrations lasted 10 days and were attended by thousands of guests. The couple have four children.
Despite losing her royal titles, Rabiatul remains married to Prince Abdul Malik, and no official announcement has been made regarding a divorce.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has previously revoked the royal titles of his former wives following their divorces. He became Brunei’s 29th Sultan in 1968 and is currently one of the world’s longest-reigning monarchs.
