Neymar Jr. was forced to spend one minute off the pitch because of a new football rule introduced to reduce time-wasting. However, he did not break any rules. Instead, as Santos’ captain, he had to leave the field because the coach failed to select a player within the allotted time.
Santos defeated Vasco 3-0 in their latest Brazilian Serie A match. The new rule came into effect after Santos goalkeeper Gabriel Brazão received medical treatment during the game.
Under the rule, when a goalkeeper receives treatment, one outfield player from the team must leave the pitch for one minute after play resumes. The coach is given 10 seconds to choose which player will leave.
Santos coach Cuca failed to name a player within the required 10 seconds. As a result, Neymar, as the team captain, was required to leave the field for one minute.
The rule has been introduced on a trial basis to reduce time-wasting and unnecessary delays. It is also being implemented in competitions including the English Premier League. Neymar’s brief absence, however, had no impact on Santos’ 3-0 victory over Vasco.
