The Vijay-led Tamil Nadu government has withdrawn a controversial order aimed at preventing students from participating in protests organized by left-wing parties and the Tamil Nadu Kakaroch Janata Party (CJP).
The order was withdrawn on Wednesday (August 19) amid strong criticism, according to The Times of India.
Issued on August 14, the directive instructed schools and colleges to take necessary measures to discourage students and young people from participating in such protests. They were also asked to submit reports on the measures taken by August 20.
Following its release, the CJP strongly criticized the directive, calling it unconstitutional and an unreasonable decision by the Vijay government. The BJP, however, supported the move and accused the left-wing parties and CJP of being agents of disorder.
The directive was reportedly issued after the CJP recently led a student protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
